10 Years at Rogers. Laid off. Replaced by HCL India. Here's my story.
I gave Rogers 10 years of my career. Last month I received a severance letter stating my "position has been eliminated."
What they didn't say: the same work is now being performed by HCL Technologies, an Indian IT outsourcing firm, under a different job title.
I'm one of approximately 150 Canadians let go in this wave while Rogers quietly offshores the same roles to cut costs. The title changes. The work doesn't.
This isn't restructuring. This is cost arbitrage disguised as elimination.
Rogers collected 10 years of my institutional knowledge, my loyalty through mergers and reorgs, and then discarded me the moment a cheaper option appeared overseas.
The federal government has no policy requiring companies to prove genuine role elimination before issuing severance. The loophole is the title change, same duties, new name, offshore team.
If you're a Rogers employee reading this: document everything now. Your job title, your duties, your team structure. If your role gets "eliminated" while a contractor from HCL picks up your tasks next quarter, that is not elimination. That is replacement.
Canadians deserve better from companies that profit from Canadian consumers.
