Hi, I belong to the tamil muslim community. I am new to this whole ancestry stuff and i really wanna learn more. But I have like no clue how to get started. Here is what i know so far:
I was told my paternal grandpa is from the rowther community (involved in horse trade with west Asia/north india from what i know)
and my paternal grandma was apparently part of this community called Marakkar. I found out that they were involved with sea trade across south east asia, Sri lanka and Colombo.
Both my parents are from from the southern part of tamil nadu, Dindigul in a small muslim neighbourhood called Begampur, This area also had links to Tipu sultan. His rockfort is still visible from my grandparents house
In our families, we speak tamil at our home but we still use a few turkic words from what i know. We call our fathers "ata" which is a turkic word for father. We practice sunni islam (although im an atheist now, not that it matters anyway lmao)
Appearance wise, We are lighter in skin complexion compared to the average tamil person and I am a 6'2 person which is pretty rare in tamil nadu.
I have always wondered if there is a chance that I have any west-asian, north indian or south east asian ancestry and want to start learning about it, I would love to know if someone knows anything about my community and i also want to know what's the next step i should take, a DNA test? if so, how?
