Fuhr said Turkey’s experience in developing an indigenous defense industrial base offered lessons for Ottawa, particularly in areas where Ankara has achieved rapid technological growth and supply-chain independence. He described Turkey as one of a small number of countries that have successfully developed a mature and largely independent defense industrial ecosystem, comparing Ankara’s progress to that of South Korea and France.

Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides has called for the removal of the TRNC flag from the Beşparmak Mountains as a so-called “confidence-building measure.”

A newspaper closely aligned with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides has called for the removal of the TRNC flag from the Beşparmak Mountains as a so-called “confidence-building measure.”

The proposal came through an editorial in Fileleftheros, which claimed the flag should be erased from the mountains.

The flag exists because Turkish Cypriots exist.

Cousin marriages, also described as consanguineous marriages, have largely disappeared in Turkish society. They are now almost non-existent. According to the latest data released by the Turkish statistical authority TÜİK, only 3 out of every 100 marriages are consanguineous, meaning unions between second cousins or closer relatives. This accounts for 3.0% of all marriages recorded in 2025, signaling a further decline.

These data suggest three main points IMO:

  1. Ethnic Turks basically never marry with their own family members.
  2. Kurds, Arabs, and other minorities with a higher prevalence of cousin marriages appear to be influenced over time by the dominant society in their norms and behavioral patterns. This is not particularly surprising; they gradually gravitate toward the broader Turkish norm, indicating that assimilation is still ongoing. Kurdish and Arab youth are becoming more similar to their Turkish peers.
  3. There is also a broader shift in traditional norms and values. I meet more and more people in Türkiye who consider marrying a relative a sign of backwardness and lack of education. This shift began first among wealthy elites and has increasingly spread to the middle class and beyond as a pattern.
