L2 Charger Quote Feedback
I am getting quotes for installing an L2 charger before the tax credit expires at the end of June. I’ve had an EV for about 6 months and have been making do on L1. I don’t have a very long commute, under 20 miles a day, but sometimes want to take longer trips on the weekends, so would be nice to recover charge faster. I had my ancient main panel replaced a 6 years ago, but still 100A service, didn’t cross my mind to upgrade to 200A at the time. I have a detached garage with only a 20A subpanel, just running lights and normal outlets. I was told by the electrician that came out to quote that I’m likely not going to be able to run an EV charger with my existing 100A service, despite my saying low <30A L2 would be enough. I am looking to purchase and use the ChargePoint Home Flex, which allows me to participate in my utility provider’s program with overnight charging rates 12a-6a @ $0.038/kWh. I’m including $500 cost in totals below.
Here is what I was quoted:
1a. 200A service upgrade - $7600
1b. EV circuit out to detached garage, hardwire to EV charger -$3100
1. Total after rebates and credits: $8200
2a. Load management box, to disconnect EV circuit to stay within 100A service limits -$1300
2b. Same as 1b above.
2. Total after rebates and credits: $3450
3. 150A separate garage service, including EV circuit install. Total after rebates and credits: $3350
I am already working to get a few more quotes, but do these numbers look reasonable?
Separate garage service seems like the obvious choice, and would allow some future 2nd EV charger or electric garage heater, but is there any other benefit to having 200A to the house?
Thanks for the advice
