The world’s first modern fingerprint system was developed in Bengal

Before fingerprints were used worldwide for criminal identification, a British officer named Sir Edward Henry developed the classification system in colonial Bengal with the help of two Indian Bengali mathematicians Azizul Haque and Hem Chandra Bose.

Their work from Kolkata became the foundation of fingerprint identification used by police forces across the world, including Scotland Yard and the FBI.

So technically, one of the biggest breakthroughs in modern forensic science was born in Bengal.

Not many textbooks mention the Bengali minds behind it.

“চিত্ত যেথা ভয়শূন্য” — Bengal has always left fingerprints on history.

Kolkata once had a secret Chinese newspaper ecosystem.

Long before social media existed, Kolkata’s Chinatown had its own Chinese-language newspapers, schools, temples, dentists, shoemakers, and even beauty salons. During the 1940s & 60s, Tiretta Bazaar and Tangra were among the few places in India where you could live almost entirely within a Chinese-speaking community.

Even crazier?

India’s first authentic Chinese food culture wasn’t born in China-town abroad like in the US it evolved in Kolkata. That’s why “Indian Chinese” dishes like chilli chicken and Hakka noodles have roots connected to Bengal.

Most people know Chinatown exists.

Very few know Kolkata once had one of Asia’s oldest overseas Chinese communities.

Bengal hides history in plain sight.
