Recently noticed a new update in the opera browser app. It has an inbuilt volume booster which increases from 100% to 500%. Voices sound pretty clear, but music starts to distort after around 350%. How does this actually work?

Also, is there a simple mac app that can boost system volume like this without a bunch of settings or virtual drivers?
