Highlight of the day? The 10,000 year old Megaloceros Giganticus antlers on display!
A wildly impressive structure built on a hill overlooking the Golden Vale. The Round Tower was constructed around 1100 while St. Patrick's Cathedral was built over a period of about 40 years from 1235 to 1270.
The Rock was the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster from the 4th century onwards and Brian Boru was said to have been crowned as King here in 977.
Just off the Tipperary Heritage Way today. I'd seen this castle through the treeline on the opposite side of the Suir (just up from Ballycarron bridge) and wanted to find out more. After a short wander up a farm road, I came across this very impressive structure. The stonework is incredibly well preserved. I was amazed to see the stone roof fully intact and there are even remains of the spiral wooden staircase up to the viewing tower.
The trail for the Tipperary Heritage Way runs along the opposite side of the River Suir. I had seen glimpses of the castle through the trees and wanted to check it out. After a short walk through farmland today, I found myself in front of a very impressive structure. The stone work is largely intact and there is even the remains of the original wooden staircase up to the viewing platform!
Stunning trail last October. Began from the centre of Bergen and up the iconic 800 steps of the Stoltzekleiven. Nearly killed me but the views on the summit were breathtaking.
Looped around to Floyen mountain and enjoyed an expensive bottle of wine after to celebrate. About 10km with 400m elevation gain. Superb trails!
Most people only visit Cahir Castle (or the Rock of Cashel) in Tipperary but there is a whole other side to explore.
I've been very interested in the Quaker influence on the area and decided it was time to check out Garranalive burial ground today. It's only a few minutes outside of the town and is quite magical!
I continued on the Tipperary Heritage Way along the Suir river to an ancient stand of Yew woodland nearby. The Swiss Cottage (contained within) may have originally been a Quaker settlement dating from about 1665.

I've become intrigued with the Quaker links to Cahir in Tipperary. The Fennell family were the first to arrive in 1659 and became very influential locally in the farming and milling trade. It was my first time visiting the above burial ground and it was quite magical!
Beautiful 7km trail starting outside the village of Upperchurch (birthplace of the famous Rapparee - Ned of the Hill). Decent elevation gain of about 400m with great views of the nearby hills and mountains.
