Volvo: “Shit happens.” €11,000 transmission bill on a 5-year-old XC40 — too old, not our problem.
The car: Volvo XC40 T2, 2021, 57,000 km.
Bought from an official Volvo dealer in the Netherlands. I am the first owner!
Every single service done at official Volvo dealers, on time, exactly as Volvo prescribes.
The problem: Clunk/bump noise on cold starts during gear shifts and when shifting into reverse while stationary. Disappears once warmed up.
Not caused by user — purely a mechanical failure.
What happened:
- Volvo dealer) verdict: full transmission replacement needed. €11,000. No alternative repair, no goodwill, no cost-share, no discount on a new/exchange car.
- Escalated to main country volvocars. Reply: "Warranty is only 2 years and the car is too old." Then redirected me back to the dealer, who already said no. Perfect circle.
What's unacceptable:
\- A €50,000+ premium car losing its transmission at 57K km is not normal. The failure is not user-caused.
\- Bought it from Volvo, maintained at Volvo, followed every Volvo rule.
Volvo markets itself on quality, safety, and customer care. If "the car is too old" at 5 years and 57K km, what am I paying the premium for?
If anyone has been through similar, I really appreciate advice.
