Recent Mystery Pioneer(?) Speakers Pick-up
Picked up these massive mystery speakers as part of a trade with another local collector last weekend. The TV behind them has a 37” screen, for reference. As best as I can tell, they’re a DIY/commissioned copy of the speakers that came with the PSC-1 system since all the drivers are in the same configuration as those that came with the PSC-1. I got some input over on Audiokarma that several furniture manufacturers were contracted to make clones of the PSC-1 speakers for regional department store chains and for PX stores at overseas military bases. I couldn’t find any hard evidence of that, but contract manufacturing under various brand names is a pretty common practice, so I’d at that as a possible background for these as well.
As a neat little bonus, the speakers also came with the documentation for each driver, the crossover network, and tone control potentiometers which are located on the back. That’s part of why I’m more inclined to think these are a DIY/single commission piece as opposed to a contract manufacturing deal. All in all they sound pretty decent, but are definitely more well suited for period appropriate music. The high and mods are great, but despite their massive size they’re a little lacking on the low bass. Eventually I’ll get around to opening them up to inspect the crossovers and clean the tone control pots, but each speaker has about 2 dozen screws holding the back on. So, that’s a project for another day. For now, I guess I’ve just I’ve just got to figure out where I’m the hell to set these massive things up.
