Our dog has become ill very suddenly and efforts to treat his condition aren't giving the result we had hoped for. Our vet wanted to put him on various painkillers over the past week but none have a long term effect.
We feel awful as our once happy-go-lucky dog, is now either in discomfort or semi-comatose on pain killers.
When we asked about putting him to sleep, the vet seemed hesitant, but also kept saying that the mix of pain killers he has been given are a "last resort".
We don't know whether we are jumping the gun with putting him to sleep, or if it is the right decision. There is no clear guidance from the vet, from our perspective.
I am wondering is this a general thing amongst vets (let the owner make the call) or does this seem strange?
In general, we have been delighted with our clinic, they loved having our dog in, and our dog loved seeing them (as he does with every human being in sight).
