I have been making these toys from firehose for a while using my Brother SE700. It’s slow, but doable. I just purchased a Singer Heavy Duty 4452. It seems to be fine when I sew through the firehose itself, but when I get to the part where I have to sew through the two layers of firehose plus 4 layers of webbing, I’m getting bird nesting on the bottom no matter what. That is when it actually sews. A lot of time the needle pierces through a few layers and then just gets stuck. I have tried a new needle, rethreading the top and bottom, using 3 different types of thread (Gutterman sew all, Coats and Clark Upholstery, and an unknown thread similar to plain Coats and Clark thread). I have the stitch length set to 3.5, tension at 4. I have tried to drop the feed dogs and adjust the foot presser tension. I did try using the hump jumper accessory that came with the machine, but the nesting happens in the middle of the piece too. I have cleaned the machine, but it’s new so there’s nothing really there considering I haven’t been able to see what I wanted. Is my Brother just actually stronger than this HD machine or does anyone have another suggestion as to what I can try?
