Hey everyone,
I’m doing a rear brake job on a 2020 Audi Q5 (TRW calipers) and running into a fitment issue with Akebono EUR1898 pads.
The pads seem to bind when sliding into the caliper bracket, specifically at the pad ear area where the anti-rattle metal spring clip sits. I’ve already:
- Cleaned the caliper bracket thoroughly
- Cleaned and inspected the abutment clips
- Tried fitting the pads with and without grease
- Confirmed the issue is still present even with clips removed
The interference seems to be coming from the metal anti-rattle spring clip on the pad ears (not the brake wear sensor or rotor contact side).
My questions for anyone who has run these pads on a B9 Q5 / TRW rear setup:
- Did you have any fitment issues with EUR1898 pads?
- Is it normal for these pads to be this tight in the bracket?
- Has anyone trimmed or adjusted the pad ear spring clip to make them fit, or is that a bad idea long-term?
- Did OEM or Zimmerman pads fit more easily without modification?
Right now I’m trying to figure out if this is:
- normal tight tolerance for Akebono
- or a case where OEM-style pads are just a better match for this caliper
Any real-world experience would be appreciated. I’m trying to avoid forcing anything or making changes that will cause noise or uneven wear later.
Thanks in advance.
