Hi everyone,
I was in a B.Ed program in Ontario and recently failed my practicum during an Improvement Action Plan (IAP), and I’m looking for advice on appealing.
I was placed on an IAP for 4 concerns. I immediately improved on 3, and the 4th (lesson planning) was still in progress. My IAP was extended for a short evaluation period.
During the final days of the extension, things became difficult:
a. Friday: I was sick and arrived about 5 minutes late
b. Monday: attended on time
c. Tuesday: rideshare issue but still arrived on time
d. Wednesday: I got very sick and went to urgent care (doctor’s note provided)
Despite this, I was informed on Thursday that I failed because I didn’t complete the required 3 days of extended IAP evaluation, and I was removed from the program.
Some key context:
- My midterm evaluation was mostly Level 2–3 (not Level 1 overall)
- The lesson planning concern (4th point) showed improvement in the last 2 lessons and was acknowledged by my AT
- The final decision seems based on a very short, disrupted evaluation window
Now I’m trying to understand:
Do I have grounds for appeal based on illness + incomplete evaluation period?
Has anyone successfully appealed a practicum failure in Ontario?
What usually helps in these cases (documentation, evaluations, etc.)?
I’m willing to redo the practicum — I just feel the final assessment didn’t reflect my overall progress or the situation in the last few days.
Any advice would really help. Thanks
