So I applied for a role at a major Canadian courier company and made it all the way to the background check stage. Pretty exciting right?
Then I realized I had listed my Advanced Diploma from college as a bachelor’s degree on my resume. Full panic mode.
The company was running a Sterling background check and there was an education verification tab staring right at me. I knew they were going to contact my college directly and catch the discrepancy.
After a lot of back and forth with myself I decided to do the right thing. I entered my accurate credential on the Sterling form and sent the recruiter a short email flagging the correction before the background check was complete.
The email was simple — just that I wanted to flag a correction, that my credential was an Advanced Diploma not a bachelor’s, that I had completed Sterling accurately and that everything else was accurate.
HR responded with “thank you for letting me know.” That’s it. No drama.
References were submitted over the weekend. Sterling is processing. Still waiting on the final outcome.
The role didn’t require a bachelor’s degree specifically — just post secondary education, which an Advanced Diploma qualifies as.
