Monthly Marketplace: Powers of the Occult

Monthly Marketplace: Powers of the Occult

Hey 'Scapers!

For those interested in Cosmetics, we're launching this one stop shop monthly series to give you all the info on recent and upcoming releases in the Marketplace!

Today we wanted to:

Get involved!

Our plans for the Marketplace are that it should be broadly relevant to the content releasing at the time. For example, the Powers of the Occult pack that released this week is meant to sit alongside this week's Dungeoneering update.

However, there may be times where a marketplace drop may not have an accompanying game update that it is tied to. These drops give us an opportunity to step away from the immediately relevant content and work on something a little more thematic! Importantly, we want to ensure that we are continually improving the detail and quality of these special outfits to make them feel more worthwhile.

For example, a few weeks ago, we released the Sandwich Lady bundle - this was the first step towards thinking about how we could bring back some of the more iconic character looks of RuneScape history that may not be present within the game anymore.

However, before we progress much further down that route, we wanted to check in the community and ask you:

  • What have been your favourite cosmetic outfits or overrides that that have come through the marketplace in recent years? (e.g. Solite or Lunar Armour)
  • What are some examples of new cosmetic outfits or overrides that you would love to see on the marketplace and that you would consider acquiring yourself?
  • Are there certain characters or character outfits that you'd love to see? (e.g. Sandwich Lady)
  • Are there certain themes that you'd love to see? (e.g. a Prifddinas theme)
  • Conversely, its important to also hear which outfits you feel very strongly about that should not appear as cosmetics in the game. Understanding this will help ensure that our guardrails for cosmetics match those that the community feels most strongly about.

Gaining insight on the above questions will help ensure that the marketplace continues to develop cosmetics and overrides that you agree fit well into RuneScape and that you also consider valuable.

For the rest of the Marketplace information, please visit todays blog!

Dungeoneering

Finally, while we have released todays topic as per our schedule, we do know that the Dungeoneering Remaster still remains at the forefront of everyone's focus, including ours! With that in mind, you can look forward to us sharing our thoughts for what we're considering with regards to XP, boss health, ammo binding (plus a full list of bugs/other feedback we have) tomorrow.

The Curious Case of the Dropped Frames (and other Microstutters)

Hey 'Scapers,

On Tuesday, April 7th we released two changes into the game that greatly improved performance for players. Both Frame Drops and Stuttering was significantly mitigated with these updates, but we have continued to monitor the performance of the game on an ongoing basis. Here's what we did:

  • We addressed a problem that was causing unnecessary computing that ultimately led to stuttering issues. With the problem tackled, the stuttering issues have also been largely reduced.
  • We changed the LODing behaviour of trees and grass, which solved the issue of consistent Frame Drops.

Todays topic is something a little different from our usual previews or feedback opportunities - its an insight into the journey we went on to improve the performance of the game... Read more about it here, but be warned - this will get a little tech heavy!

The Player Avatar Beta is now Live!

Please check out today's blog link for the full details on the beta, including what to focus on and how to provide feedback.

As a quick reminder, the player avatar is the character underneath the armour that you created when you started the account. Those foundational customizations (gender, hair style, top, legs, shoes and facial hair as well as the colour variations that are available to each of these aspects) that you picked when you first step foot on Gielinor are the focus today. There won't be an overhaul to every piece of gear or armour you could be wearing or to NPCs so please focus your preview on the avatar.

It being a beta, you can expect that there are going to be a few bugs and unfinished placeholders, as this project is still very much in full motion and has not yet been completed. While there may be things missing or not finalized, we are still polishing everything to a mirror shine for release, so please don't get too hung up on something being out of place or missing at this stage.

This beta will kick off today, May 6th, at 15:00 BST and will be available until Tuesday May 12th.

Take some time to hop in and get a feel for how the avatar will look!

How do I join?

Joining the beta is a relatively simple process, but Reddit doesn't allow the proper links - please visit the blog to see how to join!

When you first login, your live save will be imported into the Beta world. You can re-import your save into the Beta once per hour. From here you will be able to access your account as normal and engage with the avatar update.

How to provide feedback:

While we naturally expect a good amount of discussion in online spaces (like here on reddit!) around your experiences, the most helpful thing for our team is for you to engage with the Avatar Beta Host and click-through to the survey link they provide once you feel like you've got a good grasp of the new player avatar. This is the best way for everyone to have an equal voice in providing feedback on the player avatar beta at this stage.

Known Issues list:

Below is a list of issues that we are aware can occur during this beta. These have all been reported and are actively being resolved for the full release. You can also check the list of known issues associated with the beta by talking to the Avatar Beta Host.

  • Hats and Headwear cause the new avatar head to be replaced by the old avatar head.
  • Eyebrows and eyes seem to be misshapen and positioned incorrectly with some walk animations.
  • Torso can be invisible/missing.
  • Feet can be invisible/missing.
  • Legs can become misshapen and bend backwards.
  • Gaps and seams between parts of the avatar - such as on the neck or around the waist.
  • Positioning issues where the torso and legs are disconnected.
  • Hair can either be floating away from the head or positioned incorrectly/stretching.
  • Neck position can be incorrect, with the neck being too far forward.
  • Issues where the torso is positioned incorrectly and floats down near the player's knees.
  • Hair can clip with the avatar's head.
  • Some hairstyles are currently untextured/look flat.
  • Some hairstyles are stretching when the player moves.
  • Some worn items clip through the head.
  • Some hats and tiaras force the old head model on top of the new one.
  • Facial hair on male characters can result in them being broken, positioned incorrectly.
  • Worn items and cosmetic overrides that show skin on the avatar will show skin from the old model.
  • Head slot worn items and cosmetics may cause issues with animations/clipping.
  • The appearance of the character within interfaces may not look representative.
  • Textures on hairstyles are not final.
  • While using freecam there can be flickering on hair and outfits.

That it for now - thank you very much for taking part in the beta and helping make the player avatar update the best it possibly can be.

Please also remember to fill out the feedback survey!

  • The Avatar Beta is going live this week! We were intending to get it out to you today, but some last minute gremlins may mean that we need just a little longer to ensure that it's in the right place for you to check our and provide feedback for. This does not currently affect the Avatars launch date later in May. We're still looking to get the Avatar beta live as soon as possible this week, so do keep an eye out for it!
  • We're sharing a final preview of next week's Dungeoneering update this Wednesday - look out for it then!
  • We're looking to share an under-the-hood insight into the investigation we undertook to improve performance of the game - that should be out this Thursday or Friday.

Hey 'Scapers!

A couple of months ago we rebalanced the Early Game as an important step in the Road to Restoration. That update has made significant improvements to how (new) players experience the early game in RuneScape and the rate at which they find themselves able to progress.

We will soon be turning our attention to the Mid-game of RuneScape in order to build upon the positive progression we're developing for the entire RuneScape player journey.

However, before our design team gets to work digging into the data of the mid-game and determining the most effective changes to make, we wanted to check in with the community and understand the difficulties that you might be encountering first hand when progressing through the mid-game.

But what counts as the Mid-game!?

Excellent question, we're glad you asked.
For the purposes of this update, mid-game is considered to be the levels in a skill between level 50(ish) and level 80 (loosely speaking).

What's in a Re-balance?

As a reminder, re-balancing is a focus on fine-tuning the "numbers" aspect of skills while also looking to improve quality of life. It is not a remake of a skill (as much as we understand how exciting the prospect of [agility] skill remakes may be, they are best left to dedicated projects, rather than more widespread re-balances.)

How can you help?

In the first instance we'd love to hear what problems or issues you've either experienced first-hand or observed in the mid-game.

That may be skill specific issues, questing or bossing progression, drop rates afk vs active balancing or anything else that would take place in the mid game.

While we won’t be able to cover everything that may come up in feedback, these themes of your discussions will give us a really good direction for the focus of this project.

You don’t need to provide a solution either! Just hearing that “x part of the mid-game is unfun because of ?” Is already hugely valuable to us.

Whether you're a player currently going through the mid-game yourself or whether you're a seasoned veteran, we're curious to hear from you! However, it is important for us to understand how to contextualise your experience, so please do mention whether your insights are first hand experience or more opinion based.

And that's it - have at it!
