Pregnancy after hernia repair + diastasis surgery: how did it go, and do you regret doing surgery before being done having children?
Hi, I’m 34 and developed severe diastasis recti after pregnancy 2.5 years ago. Despite a lot of physiotherapy and rehab, it’s still around 4.2 cm and causes major functional problems: pain, poor balance, difficulty carrying weight, breathing issues, back pain, posture problems, and now a small painful hernia.
A surgeon told me insurance would cover hernia + diastasis repair, but advised waiting until I’m done having children. The problem is that I’m not in the right place to have another child right now, and my current condition is badly affecting my quality of life.
My first child died shortly after birth, so this is emotionally complicated too. I do hope to have children in the future, but I feel stuck between waiting for years in pain or having surgery now and risking undoing the repair with a future pregnancy.
I’d really like to hear from anyone who had a pregnancy after hernia repair and/or diastasis surgery: How did it go? Did the repair last? Did pain get worse? Did you need surgery again later? Do you regret doing surgery before finishing pregnancies? Thank you!
