I still love DVDs

As a format finalised in 1997, almost 30 years ago, I find it amazing that DVDs are still perfectly enjoyable in 2026. Yes on paper it's just 480p, But the fact is that it is sharp enough to not get in the way of enjoying media content.

Blu ray is superior, and 4k is the future, but the fact is that once you stop pixel peeping and just focus on the content, you won't even notice "DVD quality", especially with Good masters. And the fact that it's almost always half the price of blu ray, which itself is half the price of 4k. For my broke ass DVDs are perfect.

I don't even use a player and TV, I just have a Drive and watch em on my laptop. Some scenes (especially wide shots) shows the age but I really do enjoy DVD content. I still might get some blu rays depending on price and how much I love the content I buy, but for general collecting DVDs is absolutely great and I love it

Do anyone still use optical media?

I bought an optical drive recently, and I'm just curious if anyone else is still interested in the spinning plastic. The fact that optical media has nothing active to fail (unless from bad conditions destroying it chemically) always pulls me. I

Here's a story, I found an old CD that I burned when I was still in school which somehow still was in my house after like 15-20 years. I popped it to my new drive and it worked flawlessly. No other form of media can do this unless it's enterprise archival grade stuff. This is why I love optical media.

Oh and the CD was an MP3 CD full of my old favs. Well some of them still my favs. And yes all of them from the 7 seas lol.

Why are there so many cheap DVD drives bit very few bluray

I recently got into optical media after losing my 2TB hard disk (thank god nothing critical was on it) since optical media can't suddenly fail like electronics.

But when I checked to get a drive, I noticed a plethora of cheap DVD drives even from big companies like HP But next to no blu ray drives. I had to pay 10x+ for a branded drive (verbatim). If verbatim wasn't there my only option was a no name Chinese brand at similar price.

Why are there no blu ray drives when DVD which is ancient at this point still has so many cheap drives?
