“Hey. What is that?” Ethan groaned as the lemur sat down beside him on the edge of the bed, holding the improvised mortar he could barely see in the dark of the night.
“Just some crushed plants, moss.” She took some of the paste with her hand. “Among other things.”
“I hope I don’t have to eat it,” Ethan joked.
Kimbali chuckled. “No, I’ll spread it on your shoulder. Could you, um, take off your shirt for a moment?”
“Oh, okay, ‘Doc’.” Ethan followed her instructions and put the shirt aside.
“Thank you.” Kimbali applied the paste to his wound, causing him to gasp and groan.
“Ungh! Dang, that hurts.” Ethan felt a terrible heat as soon as the paste touched his wound.
The lemur laughed briefly as she smeared the paste on his injured shoulder. “You’re like a child.”
“Well, it does hurt.” The intense burning in his shoulder increased. “Shoot! I feel like it’s on fire!”
“Calm down, it will only last a little while.” Kimbali finished spreading the remedy after covering the wound completely. “Done.” She smiled at him.
“Thanks.” Ethan groaned and reached for his shirt, looking at Kimbali with a raised eyebrow. “Can I put this back on?”
“Oh yeah, sure.” Kimbali picked up a few leaves from the ground and wiped the residue of the paste from her hands while Ethan pulled his shirt on, groaning as the fabric brushed against his now treated wound.
