hi all! This is an artwork for Fabian, a surprise gift from their friend, similar to the fighting-game artwork I’ve posted before. As such, I couldn’t quite get Fabian’s input for their character, which I’ll refer to Fabian for the rest of this write-up! But even with this restriction in mind, I had freedom to draw them however, and this is the product :3

There was an artwork as a reference that had Fabian in the foreground and a realistic hyena laughing behind him. Inspired by that, I really wanted to incorporate that aspect of Fabian’s into the drawing somehow. Is it stereotypical of me to think hyenas’ laugh is their biggest character trait? Perhaps, but it’s still peak. Regardless, I also wanted to give a little context for why he was laughing. I debated what the context should be, why I would have Fabian laugh in the first place. I remember pitching it frantically in one run-on sentence because I was in the midst of getting my taxes done, trying to differentiate what each “panel” would contain. To put it simply, as I had written in the pitch, “The whole theme is like, being comfortable with who you’re with.”

The drawing would have Fabian holding hands with someone off-screen, a POV-type piece, similar to many of my other drawings, with the main focus being on Fabian’s expression and dialogue doing the heavy lifting! Because I didn’t have access to Fabian himself, I had to do a lot of guesswork for who he was and how he’d react. When I asked the friend what Fabian’s main traits were, he told me, “smug, silly, and aloof.” It was a gamble to me, a 50/50, of whether he would be embarrassed or laugh wholeheartedly, anyway. But to me, those traits seem like they belong to someone who would be shy at first, but laugh JOLLY when they’re comfortable around friends. That was the concept!

As for the drawing itself, I kept the backgrounds relatively simple as to not detract from Fabian or the dialogue. Of course, they still played a vital role, especially for the shading portion, but I opted to blur the backgrounds in the final edition. I also recently stumbled upon a tutorial for clouds on Pinterest; I tried employing it here, and you’ll see it much more often in the near future. It’s taken hold of me! Everytime you see a giant cloud, know it’s because I’m using that tutorial ヾ(≧ ▽ ≦)ゝ Of course, I also wanted to emphasize the difference in colors, one side being more blue and the other being more of a warm orange. It gives contrast! It also demonstrates that these are two different times. Sorry, there wasn’t exactly a profound reason this time, I just thought it’d be neat!
