Hi all,
It’s been about 10 years since my last build (Ryzen 7 1700X + GTX 1080ti in an In Win 303) I already sold it 2 years ago and currently using a laptop 2021 Asus zephyrus G15(5900hs, RTX 3060) and i cant stand it anymore LOL, have just recently watched a few reviews so I’m a bit out of the loop and would appreciate a sanity check on my planned upgrade.
Location: Australia
Budget: maximum is around $AUD 5500, i prefer to have an optimised build for my use case and not to spend this much if possible.
Use case:
Gaming: AAA titles + some emulation
CAD (hobby, possibly business later): AutoCAD, Fusion 360, Inventor, Revit MEP
Possibly AI workloads? not sure yet as to what can i do so this does not really matter for now but open to suggestions (i'm a mechanical engineer).
Monitor: Acer Predator ultrawide (3440×1440, 100Hz) really old but still works great
I understand CAD tends to favour strong single core performance, while for gaming X3D CPUs is King. I’m currently leaning Intel for a more balanced setup, but open to being convinced otherwise. Also, if I build with 9950X3D which I really like to but cant justify spending an extra $AUD700 for little performance gains. I want this build to last 5 and possibly stretch to 10years (tech progress is crazy so this build might not even last that long compared to future PC performance but we'll see).
TIA
component list copied from PCPARTPICKER Australia (prices in AUD). Total cost is $AUD 4,422
edit: added prices
edit2: i could downgrade the GPU to a cheaper Palit GamingPro GeForce RTX 5080 16 GB Video Card for $AUD1749 and put money towards a 9950X3D?
| Component | Selection | Price | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus 3.7 GHz 24-Core Processor | $529 | Chose this CPU as it seems like its a good balance for both gaming (3440x1440) and productivity/cad work at this price point. |
| CPU Cooler | Deepcool ASSASSIN IV 79.1 CFM CPU Cooler | $159 | I like the looks, also has good reviews (dont want to spend too much as i might go full custom loop in the future if i get bored) |
| Motherboard | Gigabyte Z890M AORUS ELITE WIFI7 ICE Micro ATX LGA1851 Motherboard | $307 | cheapest Z890 i could find in Australia |
| Memory | G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 48 GB (2 x 24 GB) DDR5-8000 CL38 Memory | $899 | i've read that intel scales well with high speed memory so i chose this 48gb which i think is more than enough for the 3D models i will be working on and because higher capacity with high speeds is freakin expensive |
| Video Card | Gigabyte AORUS MASTER GeForce RTX 5080 16 GB Video Card or Palit GamingPro GeForce RTX 5080 16 GB Video Card | $2199 $1749 | chose this card as i like the aesthetics but still on the fence, because if i go custom loop might as well go with a cheaper card as shroud looks wont matter. |
| Case | Lian Li A3 or Deepcool CH270 | $138 | still on the fence between these two, I like the vertical orienation to save space on the desk (1500x700mm) and will still have a nice view of the insides. i also might go full custom loop in the future. for the A3 i'll be 3D printing a base to change orientation to vertical. |
| Power Supply | Cooler Master V SFX Gold ATX 3.1 850 W 80+ Gold Certified orDeepCool PS850G 850W Golden Dominator SFX (this ones cheaper) | $199 | i dont really mind what PSU to get as long as its sufficient for the 270k plus and 5080 and SFX 850w gold as minimum so it can sit nicely in the case. |
