I 17F have a friend 17M, for privacy let’s say his name was E. At school, me and a couple of friends called him and his 2 friends over to us, one of my friends 18F (Let’s call her D) wanted to write him a poem just for the fun of it.
The poem went something like
“Do you support Essendon? Will you ascend to heaven with your essence and essential beauty?”
Basically a bunch of stupid words that rhymes with his name and made no sense together, it was funny, nothing with ill intent
E responded to each question, we repeated it to him multiple times.
But then E repeatedly kept saying he heard something about a “girlfriend” in the poem, and said this repeatedly, which of course confused me and all of my friends, the words don’t even sound the same, I have no idea where this misconception came from.
But then my friend, D, decided that if he kept saying girlfriend, she’ll just write something about a girlfriend if he wanted one so bad, something like that, so she wrote “E, will YOU be my girlfriend?” Underneath which she drew 2 tick boxes labelled Yes and “Yessen” (rhymes with his name)
She gave it to me to read out to him, and I did in the most over exaggerated fake sounding way you could imagine. He voluntarily ticked both boxes, it was funny,they left, break ended.
After break allegedly he went up to my other friend, asking if we were being serious about the girlfriend situation, he had to break it to him and tell him it was a joke, which apparently left him upset because he thought we were being serious
After school ended, I get messages from 3 people asking what happened, and when my friend asked some other people for me, we found out that E had gone to his friends and vented about how hurt(?) he was about the situation, and how I was leading him on and toying with his feelings.
He also said that he saw ME write the will you be my girlfriend part, and he also swore he heard the word girlfriend in every single line of the poem. I don’t even know how he misinterpreted it this badly, especially when the note was written by someone else right in front of him.
But now, I have 3 people asking me about what happened, and 2 being passive aggressive telling me I did something messed up to him.
Up to this point I had no idea he remotely had feelings for me.
maybe he took the me reading the girlfriend question part out of context and maybe that could’ve been hurtful?? I’m genuinely trying to think of how and why he heard something that wasn’t there and saw something completely different.
I didn’t write the poem, I didn’t call him over, and none of us brought up girlfriend until he kept saying he heard it over and over again.
E told I’m guessing all of his friends about the I situation since I’m getting so much shit from them. I guess I could see how it could’ve been flirting if I take a far stretch? But it’s how I talk to everyone, I’m close with all my friends and it’s also not the first time we’ve made jokes like this around him.
I genuinely don’t know how someone thought that joke was also serious, if I was genuinely asking him out, why would I ever ask him, the guy, to be my girlfriend?? And why would I do it through a poem and a tick the box page at this age??
This is the most pointless and stupid drama especially to happen in the last year of highschool, I just need an objective opinion and for this to blow over so I stop getting harassed about it, please humour me.
