Most interesting song lyrics challenge
I see no point in debating the “greatest“ song lyric ever, because each listener has their own criteria for what makes a great line.
Instead, here’s a challenge: think of a line you like, then think about *why* you like it, and share it here. I’ll start the ball rolling with a few of my own personal favorites.
Best internal rhyming: “Flying too high with some guy in the sky is my idea of nothing to do” (Cole Porter).
Most utterly obscure: “Well the sun gets weary and the sun goes down, ever since the watermelon” (Paul Simon)
Most cynical: “Ah, there’s nothing about her that $100 wouldn’t fix“ (Tom Waits)
Most heartbreakingly pathetic: “Laisse-moi devenir l'ombre de ton ombre, l'ombre de ta main, l'ombre de ton chien, mais ne me quitte pas” (“Let me become the shadow of your shadow, the shadow of your hand, the shadow of your dog, but don’t leave me”) (Jacques Brel)
Most evocative: “Let the sun set on the ocean, I will watch it from the shore / Let the sun rise over the redwoods, I'll rise with it till I rise no more / Talk to me of Mendocino, closing my eyes I hear the sea / Must I wait? Must I follow? Won't you say, "Come with me"?” (Kate & Anna McGarrigle)
