We currently have deadzones of wifi within our two storey house and just wondering if anyone had any ideas or opinions?

We currently just have our standard nbn and router from our wifi company but we have a 2 storey house and there are quite a few deadzones. I was looking at extenders but read that you lose around 50% of speed with them. And then I was looking at mesh wifi systems. But not sure how they work. Do they work in conjunction with my pre-existing router or is it a completely new installation. Or are there mesh wifi systems that I don’t have to buy the whole system for and can just use it as an extender?? Idk literally anything about this and I’m SO lost.

Simple terms and explanations would be very helpful :)
