Why does every co-founder platform try to charge people just to connect?

This has genuinely started to annoy me, early-stage founders are already broke, uncertain, stressed, and trying to build something from nothing… and somehow every platform designed to help us meet people puts networking behind a paywall.

I understand businesses need revenue, but charging people at the very beginning of the startup journey feels backwards to me. I honestly think co-founder platforms should keep networking free and monetize elsewhere. The whole point is building connections and lowering friction.

Curious what you others think...

Would You Join a Startup Through an App?

I’m building an app where founders can find contributors/cofounders (developers, designers, marketers, etc.) to build startups together.
A kind of :
LinkedIn + Tinder-style matching, but for startup teams.
The biggest question I’m trying to answer is:
What would ACTUALLY make you use something like this or completely avoid it?
For example:
Would you trust founders from an app?
Would you join a startup for equity from someone you met online?
What would make a founder look credible?
What would instantly make the platform feel low quality or gimmicky?
What would make you stay after signing up instead of forgetting the app exists?
Trying to figure out if this solves a real problem or just sounds cool in theory.
Would love brutally honest feedback.
