What Xabi Alonso did at Bayer Leverkusen is one of the most dramatic transformations in recent football.

When he took over in October 2022, Leverkusen were 2nd from bottom in the Bundesliga. Within about 18 months, he turned them into one of the best teams in Europe.

They were unbeaten for a whole season in the league. In fact, they went 51 games unbeaten across all competitions - even Bayern didn’t manage to do that.

We probably never had an ex-player show that much promise in his coaching ability.

We can only say “what could have been?” now.

I remember when Pogba was asked to do everything every week at Manchester United and was harshly scrutinised when he couldn’t. When he was moved around position to position every game to cover for the lack in the team and was robbed of what he was extremely good at when he played for the national team and his then former club Juventus.

I think we are doing exactly that to Jude Bellingham.
