my friend is neglecting his cats, help.
so back in 2024 I moved in with a friend of mine, he was this very funny, outgoing kid when I first met him but a couple months into us moving in together, he had been acting very different. he started talking about how he was recently diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and I feel like him getting diagnosed just gave him an excuse to start being a shitty person. He really was an enjoyable person to be around, up until living together. I started to noticed when he came home, he would never greet his cats. He would never play with them. He barely even gave them any sort of affection. He would lock them up in his room while he was away at work for no reason, our entire apartment started to smell like litter and I realized it was because he was barley cleaning out their litter box, their water bowl would either be bone dry majority or the time, or extremely dirty. I eventually started to tell him how bad I felt for them and that he needed to play with them more and he excused it by saying he was just depressed. Once we stopped living together, I decided to step away from our friendship so I didn’t talk to him for a few months, up until a couple weeks ago I hung out with him and I asked him how his cats were doing, he proceeded to tell me he keeps them locked up in a very small bedroom that can’t fit a queen sized bed all day long, and he doesn’t sleep with them anymore. I finally told him that he was abusing his cats and all he said was I know, as soon as I move out, I’m gonna be able to sleep with them again, but he just signed a lease to this new place where his cats are still not allowed in the living room so he’s gonna have to keep them locked up in his room all day long. One of his cats is four years old and the other is about a year and a half. it makes me so sick to my stomach thinking about these babies and I don’t know what to do. I need advice. I’ve already recommended that I could take care of them for him or I can find a different home for them and he says he loves them so he doesn’t wanna get rid of them, but he is completely neglecting them. :(
