Toronto/Mississauga to Niagara question

Hello, I’d really appreciate some advice from locals. I’ll be visiting Toronto/Mississauga in mid June. I saw that the GO Train from Port Credit Station in Mississauga to Niagara takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes. By car, Google Maps shows around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Is that realistic?

We’re planning to go to Niagara either on Sunday or Monday during the FIFA World Cup.

I still haven’t decided whether to rent a car or take the train. With a car, we’d have the flexibility to take the scenic road along the Niagara River from the south near the border up to Niagara-on-the-Lake. I’ve heard that drive is beautiful. On the other hand, I don’t want to get stuck in heavy traffic and spend 3 hours driving to Niagara.

What would you do? Would leaving early on Sunday around 8:00 a.m. or Monday at 8:00 a.m. make sense, or would you just take the GO Train?

Also, where along this route can I cross into the US? The goal is simply to step onto US soil, have a drink somewhere, and come back. 😉

Is there a border crossing within the Niagara area? And how long are the typical wait times to cross the border?

Thanks so much!
