I recently lost my job and needed to sublet my room ASAP because I couldn’t afford the upcoming months rent. A brother and sister whose lease was ending needed a place just for the same time period I was subletting my room, so I agreed since I didn’t really have any other options and May was 1 week away.

I told my roommate they’d be moving in the next week, and she said she wasn’t comfortable having 3 people in a 2 bed/2 bath and she is uncomfortable with a brother and sister sharing a room (roommate has her own bathroom and the siblings have their own room and ensuite bathroom). I said that’s fair, and if she could find someone else instead, I’d tell them not to move in—but I’d need some notice so they’re not left trying to find a place at the last minute and I know it can be hard to find a place in a week, let alone in 5 days.

Then literally the day before they’re supposed to move in, my roommate says she potentially found someone and wants me to tell the siblings they can’t stay anymore. The problem is they already signed everything and paid first month’s rent and as of today they are fully moved in. (It's been about a week now since they've moved in.)

Fast forward to today, my roommate officially found somebody else and is trying to have them do a lease takeover since I am not the original lease holder and have them removed. My roommate wants to give them like 10 days to leave and is suggesting I just refund half a month and tell them to figure it out, but I think it's unfair to just kick them out and essentially "steal" half of the rent they provided when from their perspective it was meant to cover the entire month.

Side note: All utilities are included in the rent so she would not be paying more having an additional person.

AITH for not wanting to kick them out and for having them move in even though she was uncomfortable?
