Apple Care+ Express Replacement: completely damaged/bent iphone query

Hi everyone, looking for some advice about first time using Apple Care + Express Replacement.
I am in the UK if at all relevant.

I ran over my iphone 14 and it is completely warped. I have Apple Care+ (the slightly cheaper accidental damage option, not including the higher tier Theft & Loss part)

Device is covered for Accidental Damage, and i can get Express Replacement. From what i can understand online, apple will ship out a replacement iphone 14 and i need to put my damaged one back in the box and send it to them.

My main question is about the T&C’s of the replacement device cost.
It says “if device is inoperable due to unauthorised modifications or severe damage, the temporary hold will be charged to your card” - obviously it is completely f*cked and i dont particularly want to pay over £700 for the new iphone - if i have to pay that much for a replacement, i would much rather go through cex phones or backmarket etc for a much cheaper option!

Does anyone have experience of ordering a replacement & then being subsequently charged the full amount of an equivalent new unit to their card when apple inevitably deems it un-fixable??

How likely is it that i can get hold of a replacement phone for a nominal amount (roughly £100 under ‘cracked back screen’ or ‘cracked front screen’ which i have no problem paying for!)

TIA, any help appreciated.
