Do I need a root canal or will the teeth heal?

Do I need a root canal or will the teeth heal?

5 weeks ago I had 2 deep fillings on my upper back teeth, on opposite sides. The first week there was no pain. The start of the second week I had intense sharp pain a few times, twice while eating. Lasting about an hour. The last three weeks about 3-4 times a day I have spontaneous throbbing pain that I feel in both those teeth, cheeks, and forehead also lasting 30-60 minutes. I feel pain on both sides- they do alternate between which tooth hurts. I wake in the middle of the night from the pain. I have been taken ibuprofen around the clock for 3+ weeks.

Last week I went back in to my dentist because of the overwhelming pain. They took xrays, did the tapping test (no pain), hot-cold test (no pain- which is weird bc i do have temperature sensitivity from the fillings). Ultimately the dentist filed down the filling. I thought that was the fix but nothing really has changed....

Just spontaneous intense pain 3-4 times a day in 2 different teeth. Will the nerve heal or die? How will I know? The dentist said the one filling was close to the pulp.. and if after a week or two if pain is not tappering off the next step would be a root canal. What are your thoughts? Do both teeth really need a root canal? Will the nerve heal on its own?
