D656 Passed OA in 24h

In short: It doesn’t take long to actually go through the materials for this class, so it’s worth skimming, taking the PA, seeing what you need to study, studying, than taking the OA.

The PA and OA aren’t that different. Good luck ✌️

---

Key things you should learn for PA/OA

- Differences between functionality-based and capability-based AI and which AI types fall in those categories

- Basics of Human Centered Design (If you’ve been doing the UX classes already, you probably don’t have to dive into this)

- Types of AI and what makes them different:

  • Weak AI vs Strong AI & Narrow AI vs General AI vs Superintelligence
  • Why Weak AI and Narrow AI aren’t the same
  • Why Strong AI and General AI and Superintelligence aren’t the same
  • Generative, Limited Memory, Reactive, Theory of Mind, and Self-Aware and which category each of those falls under

- HCIA or something. I forgot what it’s called, but low/high automation with low/high human effort. It’s covered in the materials. Really easy to understand and apply.

My notes

I used this video to understand the basics of AI (covered in the materials) then I researched the rest from there: https://youtu.be/cnlIK1C_QLQ?si=xf7j0-ve3Kc_6SVA

- What’s the difference between all of these different types of AI?

  • Weak and Strong AI = Consciousness
    • Weak AI appears to have human-like functions/capabilities, but is not alive or conscious or self-aware - exists
    • Strong AI is alive, conscious, and self-aware - doesn’t exist/theoretical
      • AI example: Self-aware
  • Narrow, General, Superintelligence = Intelect & Tasks
    • Narrow AI (N.A.I.) does what you program it to do. Can’t do everything a human can. - exists
      • Product examples: FaceID, ChatGPT, Text translation, Self-driving cars
      • AI examples: Theory of Mind, Reactive, Limited Memory, Generative
    • General AI (A.G.I.) can learn any intellectual task a human can - doesn’t exist
    • Superintelligence surpasses humanity’s intellect and cognitive function - theoretical/doesn’t exist
  • Subsets of AI
    • Theory of Mind (NAI) - AI that understands that humans have varying beliefs and opinions. Not all Narrow AI is Theory of Mind.
    • Reactive (NAI) - AI that takes data it’s presented with and adjusts its future responses based on that data (it reacts) Not all Narrow AI is Reactive.
    • Limited Memory (NAI) - Does what it’s programmed to do based off existing data. Does not accumulate data/learn based off previous experiences. Not all Narrow AI is Limited Memory.
    • Generative (NAI) - AI that produces products/works based on existing pieces of media. DOES NOT CREATE UNIQUE PIECES.
      • Examples: AI “Art”, AI “Music”, AI “Language Dubbing”
      • AI Products: Pretty much any chatbot (ChatGPT), text generation, and video generation

I’ve been a UX Designer for 5-6 years now, and knew I had a good chance of passing the PA on the first go based off my score on the Course Planning Tool assessment. I skimmed the material (mainly reading the summeries for each chapter) to have a general idea on what was going to be covered on the Pre Assessment. I’m not the most AI savy, but have experience due to working in tech. I took the PA and passed the same day I started the class.

I normally don’t touch the materials and just go straight to the community to find resources, cohourt videos, and study guides but this class doesn’t have anything but some cohourt meetups and a Teams group (which I didn’t want to join unless I had to). I don’t like reading but the material for this course is next-to-nothing in comparison to other classes in the UX Design degree so you won’t have a hard time getting through it.

I’m taking the OA tomorrow, but I can tell you now that you should become aquainted with AI models. I’m not talking about ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. I’m talking about the difference between Strong and Weak AI and other random things. (Shared a screenshot of a question from the PA for an example) You’ll also wanna know a little bit about the history (also in the course material) I’ll update when I’ve passed the OA.
