Junior year turnaround: how much can I improve college prospects from here?
I wanted to share my situation and get a realistic sense of my goals.
I struggled academically throughout freshman and sophomore year entirely slacking off, and I was still inconsistent in junior year. I took very minimal rigor and wasn’t involved in clubs or ECs. I also lacked a good attitude, motivation, discipline, and a clear direction for what I wanted to do in the future.
My current GPA is around 3.1 UW / 3.8 W, with limited rigor and mostly mid scores. I'm trying to improve it slightly to about 3.3 UW / 4.2 W by the time I apply.
My ECs so far include Key Club (started in junior), paid tutoring in Accounting and Comp Sci (both I currently have A’s in), 2yrs volunteering to teach a non-English language to young children through an org., and a long-term interest in art (I took Art 1–2 Advanced in 9th & 10th and it's a genuine passion).
It was only recently, at the end of my junior year, that I found what I want to pursue, but also realized what I've gotten myself into. I want to pursue finance and eventually private equity, so my short-term goal is to get into a strong business program and perform well in a finance major.
I need to get into colleges that can lead to strong career outcomes, but they’re competitive, so I have to improve significantly from here.
- Take 3 APs over the summer, finish in ~2 months (AP Precalc, Gov, & Macro)
- Take 3 APs and 3 helpful elecs in senior with A-A+'s (AP Calc AB, Stats, Art History)
- Aim for a 1450–1500 SAT score by the end of summer, maybe try ACT if not enough
- Join DECA and compete, stay in Key Club, join Art Club, possibly start small finance/investment club if I have time
- Continue tutoring, adding Precalc and SAT prep too
- Earn strong recommendation letters based on my transformed performance and effort
- Compelling personal essay highlighting my individuality or something setting me apart
I’m just trying to understand how realistic my path is, given where I currently stand, and especially what I can still change vs. what wouldn't be meaningful at this point. Any help is appreciated!
EDIT: I forgot to mention: Apart from AP Precalc, I'm taking either AP Macro and Gov or AP CSA, one of the two. I could possibly take all 4, unsure.
