To the writers of the MK2 movie (SPOILERS AHEAD)

I can’t imagine Todd Gardner, Simon McQuoid, Greg Russo or anyone else from the MK2 movie is surfing Reddit for feedback on their work but I just wanted to say, from a long time fan of the games, that this movie was the best MK has been in a while and I really appreciate it.

MK has been my favorite game franchise since the first game hit arcades, and unlike Max Scoville at IGN, my love hasn’t stemmed from the violence and gore, though this movie executed perfectly on those fronts. For me, it’s been the characters and their progression, the story, the lore that was built up from one game to the next.

And as a fan of all of that, the mystery, fhe palace intrigue, the secret alliances and betrayals and everything that gets built up through the narrative from one game to the next, I have to say, you all NAILED IT. You GET it. You showed real care for these characters, for their origins and motivations and carrying over these ideas from one movie to the next, and you listened to fans.

This movie made me want Cole Young as a regular roster character in the next game. You heard the fans on his build up in the first movie and you found a way to bring him back in a compelling way without making so much of the movie about him.

You found a way to make Karl Urban, the biggest name in the movie, mean a whole lot without making the whole movie about him. Having him lose so early on was a stroke of genius, as it allowed his character to grow throughout into someone that was really compelling.

You found a way to make him gaining his powers a fun journey without throwing the word “arcana” in our faces every five minutes and making his story mirror Cole’s from the first game.

You found a way to bring Noob Saibot into the movie perfectly without over-explaining his transformation or even calling him Noob or Noob Saibot. Honestly, this makes me wish they’d just call him Bi Han in the games from now on.

You found an amazing way of depicting Liu Kang as a massively important character without making him the main character as the first four games and the ‘95 movie did and that was a fantastic choice that allowed both him and the rest of the cast to shine. Even if he becomes that main character in the next movie, it will have felt earned by that point.

But most of all, you found a way to tell a really compelling Mortal Kombat story without feeling like you had to be slaves to the source material. That takes guts and also a ton of talent, especially given that the first movie wasn’t as well received by fans. You listened, you learned, you evolved and you put something together that was the perfect balance of AMAZING fight sequences and quality storytelling.

I just wanted to thank you, even if you’ll probably never see this. You told your own Mortal Kombat story and I absolutely loved it. Cannot wait for the third movie though I will say this: I read on IMDB that this is intended to be a trilogy. I don’t want a trilogy. I want you to keep going. You have Shinnok. You have the Deadly Alliance. you have Onaga and Armageddon and a whole lot more. If you can tell stories this well, I trust you to go in any direction you choose with those villains or really anyone else. Hell, use the One Being. Use Kronika. Use a brand new villain that you create. If it works half as well as this movie worked, I’ll be there, in the theater, watching your work in IMAX.

Thank you for getting it right. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
