Hi guys!
I'm based in Vic and currently a student teacher in the second year of a Master of Teaching in Primary AND Secondary education. My background is science (my major in Bachelor's degree was biology, minor was chemistry). Because it's a primary and secondary course, I can only have ONE secondary method. I chose chemistry as I heard there's more need for chem and physics teachers and thought doing this dual degree would provide more opportunities.However, I was given the choice of either Biology or Chemistry (so I was approved for both) and taught some senior biology in my secondary placements. This is in addition to the 4+ years of tutoring experience I have in VCE Chem and Bio.
After doing the secondary placements, though, I feel like teaching science at the secondary level is my true calling and really wish I chose a Master's in JUST secondary (no primary). This way, I could have 2 secondary methods, i.e. BOTH biology and chemistry, and become a specialist teacher in both up to VCE level.
It's too late to change now obviously... but my question is, once I graduate and start teaching would I be limited to teaching just chemistry (and junior science)? Given my existing Bachelor's qualification and teaching degree in prim/sec, would I still be in a relatively good position to teach biology (up to VCE level) in high school too if there's a position available? Do principals consider your undergraduate degree as well as your teaching course?
Do any of you guys have a similar story and now teach outside the subject you had in your teaching degree??
Hope that makes sense, maybe it seems I am worrying too much or overthinking it 😅, but I'd appreciate some of your experiences or insight.
