"I bought these black robes before we knew about the dark Lord!"
I don't know how we, the culture of movie fans on the internet, can stop this from happening, but I feel it needs to be discussed.
Over the decades there are so many examples of a collective review-bombing, or troll campaigns against movies that haven't been released yet, some that come to mind are:
Solo: A Star Wars Story (franchise fatigue, probably?) i love this movie and i think most star wars fans would as well if they gave it a chance
People were Against Daniel Craig as James Bond and then Casino Royal turned out to be hugely successful. His tenure has been up and down but i don't think anyone thinks he was a poor choice anymore
Similarly, Michael Keaton was seen as a terrible choice to play Batman in 1989, and people were hating on Tim Burton's movie before it even started production. Now it's considered the standard by which all others are measured (also Ben Affleck and Robert Pattinson - seeing a theme)
The Live Action Snow White and The Little Mermaid (possibly backlash against perceived diversity-washing, and, in the case of Snow White, hand-wringing over how the Dwarf characters were being handled) I haven't seen either of these movies, so i will not venture an opinion
Captain Marvel (combination of franchise fatigue and backlash against the lead actress) I think this movie is fine, lower mid-teir for MCU, didn't deserve the level of hate it received
The Promise (aparently political backlash by a very niche but vocal group of people with strong opinions on the Armenian Genocide of World War I) i haven't see nthis movie either
Even Black Panther was review bombed before it was released (probably a combination of franchise fatigue and perceived diversity-washing) turned out to be great and the early review bombing was largely rendered moot
Now I'm seeing it happen again with the Odyssey.
Anyway... Please people, wait for the movie to come out and watch it before you say something about it on the internet. you can decide not to watch it if the casting or trailers don't appeal to you, but then, you should forfeit your right to give it a review.
I'm seriously sitting here laughing out loud thinking about this scene right now
