First off, I am 100% the target demographic for this game. I almost exclusively play tag fighters (dbfz got me into fighting games) and love invincible. Having read both the comic, spinoffs, and watched the show. I had played power rangers battle for the grid, and my expectations for content and features was almost spot on.
As someone who wants to have player expression, and come up with combos on the fly and lab cool stuff, this game nails it. The combo expression is truly insane, with me coming up with new routes on the fly in matches. It’s probably the games biggest strength, and I love how its core identity as a tag fighter is so integral to every game mechanic/facet. Though this comes at a cost
I don’t particularly like comeback mechanics. Doesn’t feel great to get robbed at a 3-1 advantage because a solo character is so extremely buffed/deadly. This game has me rethinking that mentality. I feel completely naked when I’m down to a single character. Matches feel so hopeless at that point, that I’d hit a surrender button if given an option. I think something simple as extended combo length meter for a solo character would be a great change.
In terms of presentation, I’m mostly satisfied. Was shocked how well the story mode looked visually, and am really stoked for its continuation. The character models themselves look really nice, with everyone looking crisp. I’d like some more frames for certain moves/characters. Specifically getting up from a hard knockdown is so sudden, that I find it hard to time a meaty.
Music hasn’t been discussed but it’s actually pretty great on that front. Nothing that’s jumping out Ala guilty gear. Though my ears have perked up several times listening to certain match music.
I’m choosing to be optimistic on this games future. I think for every 20 invincible fans who get burnt trying out a fighting for the first time, there will be 1 who try’s to stick with it. This game has tons of potential, and hopefully with some dlc roster support and buffing of the edges, this games community and staying power can become INVINCIBLE
