retailer only offering store credit for a return of wrong sized shoes purchased following their website advice

I am in NSW and I purchased a pair of shoes from a vendor in VIC( they have a physical store there) via website.
I wear size 9 US but their website clearly mentions “We’ve found these to be a snug fit. If you’re unsure, take a half size up”. So I ordered 9.5US since they do not offer free returns and I did not want a small pair of shoes.

However, upon receiving, they are bigger and I asked them if they could exchange it for size 9 but the customer service said I have to pay for the returns (fair enough) and upon receiving, they will issue store credit and can’t guarantee an exchange.

I believe it’s not a change of mind returns because I followed their advice on sizing.

Any advice?

My grandfather was born on 1932 AD- when Nepal was pretty much feudalistic society! He was barred from education and virtually had no land rights until the 60s.

Pretty much everyone was poor except for the landlords, royals and people around them until the country finally opened up for multiparty democracy in the 90s which at least mushroomed schools and neoliberalism allowed people to travel to KTM and abroad. But more than half of the country was still illiterate, girls were being sold to India for prostitution from the hills, AIDs was picking up in the midwest (which wasn’t even connected by road networks).

It was a perfect timing for Prachanda and Co. to start an armed uprising. You can call it India’s long game or some grand design, but there was no way the social status quo could have changed without that revolt ( even though the ending was anticlimactic).

People need to realise that our country had a long transitional phase from 2006 to 2024. Was it natural to have that long transition phase? Absolutely not. But we have a very short democratic practice in this country and after the advent of mass telecommunications and opening of the economy- poor people saw the way to make some money in Gulf- the government laid back in bed enjoying the remittances. New generation post 2006 found themselves to be a part of Netizens. Corrupt officials saw the opportunity for grab and poor people got poorer everyday. It is so fascinating how money has changed Nepali society in last 30 years.

The reason Kathmandu valley looked clean and planned before 50 -60 years ago is because other people couldn’t afford to move and live there and rich kings made it look pretty. You can have a cleanest capital city like Ashgabat or Pyongyang and poor people with no means to live.

Sometimes, just think, ours is a country, maybe older than the US, but wayy younger when it comes to human rights, and freedom to move and make the best of the life. So, cities will be messy, roads will be crowded, and people will hawk and peddle and try to make their ends meet. Nothing wrong with that.
