Storytelling through camera angles
A big theme in the ending of DR2 is the idea of an uncertain future that Hajime is forced to confront at the end of the game and how it links to his own insecurities
This is portrayed best in the FINAL image of DR2 where the camera angle used creates a foward-facing perspective. What this may symbolise is:
•Shift in ideology for Hajime. He’s no longer running away from his past or insecurities. He’s actively confronting the future. Refusing to be scared or intimidated by the future, he is now looking forward
•Another effect the “foward-facing perspective” creates is that his face is hidden. This may symbolise the uncertainty of his future. Hajime acknowledges the unpredictability of his own future. He doesn’t know what to expect from his own future however he’s come to term with that idea. He is no longer going to run away
But my favourite part of this image is how it directly contrasts the nightmare Hajime gets of his past during chapter 3.
The image of his past is a direct contrast to the final image of DR2. The camera angle is positioned highly, creating the perspective of the player looking down onto Hajime. Portraying Hajime as being quite vulnerable and powerless. His face further reveals how emotional he actually is, he tries his best to keep his calm throughout the game however we eventually see it crack in trial 6.
DR2 is my favourite game in the franchise. I love how it can use the smallest details like camera angles to portray the development of Hajime. Hajime’s battle with his self-esteem is not only realistic but resolved really well which is why i love his character sooo much
