Hi all! Hope this is the right sub for this. Need advice for potty training young!
So this past Friday, my toddler (17 months), asked to go potty for the first time. I let him and he successfully used the toilet for the first time!
We’ve never practiced him going potty, but he does know what it is and that we (husband and I) pee/poop on the potty. I stay home with him and he comes to the bathroom with me every time I go, and I’ve explained what I’m doing when I go. He knows all his body parts by their anatomical names, including his privates. He also understands where poop/pee comes out of, and he understands and can communicate when he has to go. On Saturday, I got a step up/folding toddler potty that goes on top of the toilet and he LOVES it. When we are home he will tell me he needs to go potty, and he goes on the toilet successfully every time for poop and pee.
Here’s the issue. He pretty much is flat out refusing to go in his diaper now. This is fine at home because we can just use the potty, but when we’re out or in the car he gets very upset when there’s not a toilet right away. It’s only been 3 ish days, and I try my best to get him to a toilet, but I don’t want to end up setting him back on potty training by inadvertently “making” him use his diaper when he doesn’t want to. He gets VERY upset and uncomfortable now when he does have an “accident” in his diaper.
Clearly *I* was not ready for potty training, but he is, so I’m not sure what to do. Please help, any advice, products I can buy, books, etc. is welcome!
