Got two shoots from last years tuber. Do I need to separate before repotting?

Never grew leaves this year and no green when scratching bark. Cleared out the soil to see roots which look OK?

Planted these tulip bulbs last November (UK) in a cut in half whisky barrell. They have now flowered in spring and are spent. Would there be any problems if I planted some dahlias in the same planter possibly with some extra compost to give some colour in the summer? Could I get away with 2 or 3 dahlias in this halved whisky barrell? It is quite large. Thanks!

Hi everyone

Fairly new to dahlia growing, could I get away with planting 3 dahlias around the edge in this very large pot (45cm diameter) or should I just plant a single one in the middle? I'm in the UK if that makes any difference.
