Severe packet loss + 800ms+ latency from BOM (Mumbai) — anyone else? [2026-05-12]

Anyone else on Vultr Mumbai (BOM) seeing this right now? Started around 17:00 UTC today (2026-05-12). Status page says BOM is healthy but it really isn't from where I'm sitting.

My instance is barely doing anything — CPU 90% idle, no NIC errors, 36% bandwidth used for the cycle, not compromised, not under load. But every outbound connection is borked. DNS takes 10+ seconds because lookups keep timing out and retrying. apt update is downloading at 3 KB/s. SSH feels like 2003 dialup.

Ping to Google's own Mumbai PoP (same city as the VPS, should be <5ms):

8 packets transmitted, 6 received, 25% packet loss rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 632/683/796/54 ms

mtr to that same Mumbai PoP shows where it falls apart — at Vultr's own edge gateway:

HOST: Loss% Avg Wrst

  1. 169.254.169.254 0.0% 0.2 0.5
  2. 100.100.200.1 (Vultr edge) 29.2% 815.0 2206.0
  3. 10.90.0.137 37.5% 904.7 2216.0
  4. 10.90.0.5 29.2% 747.5 2339.0
  5. 103.27.170.10 (Tata/NIXI) 58.3% 832.1 2346.0
  6. 72.14.239.103 (Google) 37.5% 628.3 898.3
  7. 74.125.253.165 33.3% 695.6 898.2
  8. bom12s09-in-f14.1e100.net 33.3% 708.8 925.7

Latency goes from 0.2ms at my kernel to 815ms at Vultr's edge router, both inside Mumbai. That's not geography, that's queueing — something on their side is choking. Path stays in India too (Tata/NIXI at hop 5), so it's not even being detoured through Singapore.

Filed a ticket. Hoping someone here is seeing the same so I know it's not just me being unlucky on one host. Will update when I hear back.
