The best material for topper that takes the edge off a firm mattress

I am closing in on a solution for my mattress nightmare, thanks to the help of this sub.

I have a supportive frame and firm mattress. The issue is that while the tension of the mattress is right, it's a cheap mattress with not much in the way of a "comfort layer." The surface is too hard even though the whole mattress is not. Plus the tufts are annoying as hell

I tried a firm foam topper. Even though it feels good quality and it's actually fairly firm, I noticed my hips sink in too much. It's not even that thick at 6cm. Once I took it off the bed, my back pain got much better.

If I can't use a foam topper, what material is best? Most other mattress toppers I see are made of hollowfibres, so it's essentially like putting a big duvet down on your bed.

I tried looking for something made of coir, but those don't exist around here.

Would one of those duvet-like toppers work, or would it just injstantly compress? Any other suggestions?
