Interview Advice from an Expert

As a former interviewee at a T200 law school, here are some simple tips to make sure you stick the landing:

  1. Wear a tie - Make sure you look professional. Some applicants think ties are optional, but this is a mistake. Ties signal professionalism. More ties = more professionalism. Wearing 2, 3, or even 4 ties is a signal that you are the most professional applicant.
  2. Be respectful of everyone's time - If you have a call with a big law attorney or CEO right after your interview, be sure to let your interviewer know. Namedropping an important person not only signals prestige, it helps the interviewer accommodate your busy schedule.
  3. Speak politely and respectfully - You should always address your interviewer in a professional manner. When in doubt, call them "Your Honor."
  4. Know your "why" - Whether it's "I want to change the world" or "Premed was too hard," they want to know why you're pursuing a degree in law!
  5. Follow up - After your interview, a courteous thank you note or email to your interviewer is customary. To go above and beyond, you may want to personalize your note with a profession of love, bouquet of flowers, and/or lock of your hair to demonstrate your commitment to their law school.

Best of luck to you all in your law school journeys!
