Has anyone tried using Chexy for rent payments using the Wealthsimple VIP? I just got my card this week and am planning on using chexy with it.

My mom (55) has been an employee at a fast food restaurant for 25 years. She is vocal about mistreatment and noncompliances on the owner/general manager’s part (not providing vacation pay, taking tips), and she also reported this to the ministry of labour, which resulted in an investigation 2-3 years ago. I believe the owner does know that she was the one who reported the business.

Since then, her wage has been stagnant (she was only making minimum wage when she was a supervisor) her responsibilities have gradually been stripped away (demoted from manager to supervisor, now being demoted again to a crew member), and now, her hours are being cut (from 40 hours to 30 hours). She thinks her hours will be cut even more. It also doesn’t help that her body is getting weaker, she has aches and pains all over that now prevent her from lifting most things. She also thinks that her inability to lift things has caused her management to try to get rid of her.

A few weeks ago, the general manager called her into their office, and he basically told her that she’s been at the business for a long time, that she’s getting older, and it would be a good idea if she considered retiring. He also said that during her shifts, she is not making the expected amount of sales and pulling her weight at the restaurant, which is pretty untrue, as my mom does go out of her way to ensure she’s doing a good job. She’s been pretty concerned about what they’re going to do now, and she’s been messaging the general manager and owner telling them that she wants to discuss her concerns, and her feelings about being mistreated. They haven’t responded to her messages.

She’s speaking to some lawyers now, and they’re saying that she could get 1-1.5 years of severance if they continue to cut her hours or fire her entirely. But she’s concerned that they could use her “poor performance, not meeting sales targets” as justification for firing her, and justification for not providing severance. Would she be entitled to severance? Should we be looking at fee only lawyers? Or contingency lawyers?
