$3.2M study aims to ease downtown Kalamazoo’s train delays

Bottomline its not happening yet compared to what I saw somewhere else. I couldn't see if there's a full wall.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Kalamazoo is seeking a solution to the city’s outdated rail network that causes lengthy traffic delays downtown.

The Kalamazoo City Commission unanimously accepted a $3.2 million grant to study a plan to move the Kalamazoo rail yard at 2425 King Highway away from downtown.

Moving the rail yard could reduce the length of time drivers spend waiting for trains and the frequency of train crossings, said Kalamazoo Public Services Director James Baker.

The rail yard was built in the 1800s, before cars were invented, and doesn’t efficiently accommodate the direction of freight train travel through the city, according to the meeting agenda.

PORTAGE, MI — The historic Hayloft Theater Barn is officially reopening Thursday, May 7.
The occasion marks the second anniversary of the tornado that swept through Portage, damaging the barn and toppling trees in one of the city’s most popular parks.

The 5:30 p.m. celebration at Celery Flats park is an “old-fashioned barn dance” with expert-led square dancing, a barbecue dinner, hay bales, barn lanterns and cornhole.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A sports group that has acquired several West Michigan ice rinks in the last year is under investigation by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, which is looking into whether Black Bear Sports Group is violating antitrust rules.

A civil inquiry obtained by News 8 said the office’s corporate oversight division was reviewing the company for “potential anticompetitive and unfair trade practices involving the consolidation of youth ice hockey facilities and programs in Michigan.”
----

In Tuesday a statement to News 8, Black Bear said it was unaware of an investigation and that the company was growing the game of hockey across the country at a higher rate than average.

“We are not aware of any investigation by the Michigan Attorney General, or any basis for such an investigation,” Black Bear’s spokesperson Evan Nierman said in a statement. “Our sole mission is to save and revitalize these arenas so communities have a place to skate for years to come. Our policies and prices are transparent and competitive, and if they weren’t, families would go to rinks nearby. Instead, we are growing the game of hockey at more than four times the national average, and it’s important to note that in Michigan, BBSG owns or operates 9 rinks, out of more than 100 and nationally, Black Bear owns or operates just 47 out of around 1,700 rinks in the United States.
