The plot really veers off course in a slapdash way at the end of the game.
Everything has revolved around Grace being sought after: her adoptive mother being on the run, Gideon being bent on finding her.
We get a flashback to what feels very much like a child version of her, which seems like it was on the verge of presenting a coherent theory of the plot: she’s a Spencer experiment and the original source of the DNA behind a failed cloning effort to replicate Elpis (or otherwise the one successful candidate to emerge from that program, who’s gotten away). The kid she bonded with earlier was genetically related to her. Her ability to stop Elpis is intrinsic to her DNA.
Instead, we’re told this was all a red herring, the flashback was to a random clone who’s not otherwise connected to the plot, Spencer adopted Grace as a perfectly normal child, everyone was mistaken about her being special, the entire plot of her mother being on the run was a comedy of errors based on speculation (Really? The bad guys put all these resources into the hunt without any evidence?), and she stops Elpis by… reviewing video footage of an interview with Spencer and coming to a conclusion anyone could have.
It starts to feel very contrived and hollow, while also being extremely adjacent to a plot that would have actually made some sense.
What went on here, do we think? Did they switch things up late in the game, and if so, why?
