Brand new compressor failed after 1 month — HVAC company says “common terminal grounded” and claims manufacturer defect. Looking for advice.
About a month ago, my HVAC company replaced the compressor in my AC unit. The AC stopped working again already, and they came back out today.
Their report says:
- compressor has “extremely high resistance”
- common terminal is grounded
- capacitor, contactor, wiring, and breaker all look good
- no refrigerant leaks found
They mentioned it could be a manufacturer defect, but I’m trying to understand whether this is normal for a compressor that was replaced just a month ago.
A few questions:
- Does a grounded common terminal usually mean the compressor has failed?
- Is it common for a new compressor to fail this quickly?
- Could installation issues or another system problem cause this?
- What should I ask them to check before replacing anything again?
Just looking for advice from people with HVAC experience before I move forward.
