I do a lot of projects! I have three spaces I do this work in: a garage for wood, plaster and 3d printing, a small craft room for non hazardous detail work, and I share an office space with my partner for purely computer based work.
I would like to be able to switch my outputs so I can see and interact with my pc on dual monitors in a station in each of the rooms as needed. I have a powerful computer, but internet in our area is spotty, so an internet based Remote Desktop solution is out. The rooms are connected, one is over the other 2 and I’m handy, so running cables is no problem.
I do a lot of different things, but the most intricate are gifts for loved ones and I have a multigenerational household where everyone else has access to all of these rooms. I don’t want them seeing what I’m making on mirrored computer screens in the other rooms. Additionally, a lot of what I do involves detailed 3d models that are very easy to mess up so I don’t want the other keyboards and mice engaged when I’m working in a different area either so someone can’t accidentally bump and destroy my work. To effectively lock out the others I’m leaning toward a switch based system.
The 3rd hurdle is that I want to be able to send and receive usb drive files to and from the computer (mainly 3d models, cnc instructions, etc) whatever I set up needs to have a way to do that since my drafting is often done in the office but tweaks are done in the garage. Since I have to put on and take off some serious PPS and use a ventilated space I want to be able to breach those seals as little as possible.
I know of and use a kvm switch currently to switch between laptop and desktop for work and home on my dual monitors, and I know reverse KVMs are a thing, but keyboards, mice, speakers and usbs don’t seem to have extra ports on the ones I’ve seen. I’m stuck at for how to get the versatility I need without relying on an internet service or WiFi service.
Any advice you can give would be appreciated!
