So to start, I’ve contacted my doctor and we’ve got a whole strategy in place to tackle this problem. Ophthalmology and Neurology appointments are already made.
I had a posterior communicating artery rupture in June 2024. My rupture was repaired with coils. I had double vision for about two weeks but my vision returned to normal before I was released from the hospital.
Last summer my IR decided I needed a stent over my wide necked aneurysm. I started Plavix and aspirin for my blood thinner protocol and had the stent placed in August of 2025.
March 6 of this year I had my follow up angiogram. My aneurysm was embolized and my doc was extremely happy with that result. He said everything looked great. That day I stopped Plavix, but continued the full aspirin.
About four days later I started having light pain behind my right eye. The pain wasn’t very intense, but it made me nervous because of the location. It followed a pain pattern from when I had the rupture. Another week passed and I have a scintillating scotoma. I had this a bunch before the rupture. I had zero since the stent was placed. Again, I already had experienced the visual disturbance and I knew it was harmless, but it made me nervous to have one again. A few days later I had eye pain followed immediately by the scotoma. A week later, it happens again. In another 10 days or so, it happens again.
I had a MRI this week. The only issue of note is “Mild chronic small vessel ischemic changes seen within the supratentorial white matter. “
A quick Google tells me this is a mild reduction in blood flow of the micro vessels in the brain. It’s common in people that have had migraines, high blood pressure or another inflammatory process in the brain (like an aneurysm.)
So I’m wondering if the combination of small vessel issues with stopping Plavix caused a reduced blood flow to the optic nerve? I’ve read that there can be a rebound effect after stopping Plavix.
So I’m curious if anyone else has had this problem. I’m still having pain behind the eye occasionally. The last visual disturbance was on the 22nd of April.
