Does car ownership still make sense if you’re not driving every day anymore?
I’ve been going back and forth on buying a car lately but the more I think about it the less straightforward it feels.
At first it was simple in my head if you need transport, just buy a car and deal with everything else after but now I’m realizing it’s not just about the purchase itself it’s about how much you actually end up using it day to day.
Some weeks I feel like I would definitely benefit from having one, especially when I’m moving around a lot but other weeks, I barely go anywhere and it starts to feel like I would just be paying for something that sits most of the time.
That’s the part I didn’t really consider before it’s not just the buying decision, it’s everything that comes after it too. Insurance, maintenance, parking depending on where you are, and even the idea that if your situation changes later, you might not even want to keep the same car long term.
I also know people who bought quickly because they were tired of relying on rides or waiting around but later ended up rethinking it once their routine changed.
So now I’m kind of stuck in that middle space were buying still makes sense sometimes but not enough to feel like an obvious decision anymore.
Feels like ownership used to be more automatic, but now it depends way more on how consistent your daily routine actually is.
